Selena Inouye

I am a Mar Vistan

Hi, I’m Selena Inouye and I’m seeking re-election as an At-Large Director on the Mar Vista Community Council (MVCC). I'd be honored to serve our community again, as Mar Vista has been my home since 1994. I'm a retired clinical social worker, a person with disabilities and the spouse of an Asian American.

I embrace my role as an advocate and ally, working towards diversity, inclusion, equity and equality for all in our community.

Focusing on Serving My Community

Over the years, I've heard my neighbors say they felt left out of the decision-making process about important issues facing our neighborhood. Hearing these concerns inspired me to become more involved with my neighbors and my community.

I began by serving as Block Co-Captain for our street's Neighborhood Watch in 2012. I participated in the rally to save Pepy's Galley and Phil Yoakum's Bowling Supply in 2014.

Since 2017, I've been leading a group of neighbors advocating for more community engagement as well as City transparency and accountability on the Great Streets Venice Blvd project.

Thank you for your consideration.

Fulfilling My Promises to Stakeholders

I've kept my promises and you can continue to count on me to:

• listen to what everyone in our community has to say and represent both the majority and minority positions on the issues that concern us

• help more of our neighbors get involved with the MVCC

• advocate on your behalf with our City officials and Departments, asking them to be more responsive to your needs

• advise you about the City's and other entities’ projects that will have an impact on you and your neighbors

Knowledge

My work as a clinical social worker sharpened my skills in advocacy, community organization, outreach, and nonprofit and volunteer management. I also possess strong people skills.

Experience

I have served on the MVCC for 2 years. I founded and co-chair the MVCC Ad Hoc COVID-19 Community Response Committee. I also served on the MVCC Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Qualifications

I have the time, energy and passion to serve our community. My professional skills and previous Board experience make me a great choice for At-Large Director on the MVCC.

  • Mobility and transportation are regional issues. So for past 4 years, I've participated with the Venice Neighborhood Council's Ad Hoc Parking and Transporation Committee. In 2019, I was appointed an official member of the committee.

  • In 2020, I was appointed as a co-chair to the Westside Regional Alliance of Councils Mobility and Transportation Committee. I now regulary interact with leaders from 13 other local Community and Neighborhood Councils.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, I reached out to other Neighborhood Council leaders to learn about projects that could benefit our community too. I am grateful to the Palms, Los Feliz and Central Hollywood NCs for their help.

  • In April of 2021, I was elected co-chair of the Congress of Neighborhoods Outreach Subcommittee. I'm working with volunteers across the City on the Congress Planning Committee which is putting together the 2021 annual day of education and networking for all 99 Neighborhood Councils Citywide.
